15 Home Energy Saving Tips No-Cost or Low-Cost:
You know Ive never really thought too much about the cost of energy until I became a home owner and started getting the energy bills. Nothing like a few high bills to open your eyes and snap your wallet closed huh. Funny thing is I’m a plumber so I have a somewhat good knowledge of most things home related. But I admit that I never really thought about  money saving energy tips until we bought our house and the heat hydro not being included in the rent. So I thought I would go on the hunt for some energy saving tips to help save money.

  1. Lower your thermostat at night and whenever the house is unoccupied. Close off and don’t heat unoccupied rooms (unless you have a heat pump). If you consistently set your thermostat back at night 10 degrees Fahrenheit, you may reduce your heating bill by 10-20 percent.
  2. Lower the thermostat and dress warmer. As little as 1 to 3 degrees (F) makes a noteworthy difference in energy consumption.
  3. Lower the temperature on your electric water heater to 120 (F) degrees. Turn it off when leaving for extended periods of time. Electric water heaters can be set on timers; gas heaters must be set manually.
  4. Set refrigerator temperatures between 37 and 40 degrees (F). Clean the coils. Keep the refrigerator stocked; it takes more energy to cool an empty refrigerator.
  5. Consider replacing your older model refrigerator, especially if older than 10 years. Older models can often use over 3 times the energy of newer models.
  6. Wash full loads of dishes and air dry.
  7. When washing clothes, use warm or cold water and rinse with cold. Air dry clothes, but not indoors as this creates unwanted mold and moisture problems.
  8. Shut off lights, computers and other electronic appliances when you’re not using them. Many computer monitors have a sleep mode setting which, when activated, greatly reduces energy consumption.
  9. Always use the bathroom or kitchen exhaust fans while showering or cooking and baking to avoid potential moisture problems.
  10. Use a microwave or toaster oven for smaller items.
  11. Install a low-flow shower head. Showers use less hot water than baths; also consider taking shorter showers.
  12. Close your fireplace damper and seal the opening shut when not in use.
  13. During the heating season, open south-facing window coverings (e.g. drapes, blinds, etc.) during the day. Close all window coverings at night to keep the heat in.
  14. Install foam gaskets behind electric-outlet and switch-plate covers.
  15. Examine and adjust, if necessary, weather stripping, door sweeps, and thresholds

Aidan on the boat house

During the summer we had the opportunity to spend sometime in Mont-saint marie at a friends cottage. But I never took the time to post any images for friends and family to see. Heres a picture of Aidan on the boat house, right before he went into in the inflatable dingy that gets towed behind the Sea doo. He had a blast being that dingy thingy but said that the middle seat was kinda scary.

Oh no we’re Hockey parents

Thank god there's a Timmies (Tim Hortons is a coffee shop - for my American friends) not too far from where we live, it makes the whole notion of getting up at an un-godly hour in the morning on the weekend, just that much more bearable. Ok rant aside, it's really quite entertaining to be honest. Comon seriously how can you not find a gaggle of 5,6 and 7 yrs olds suited up in the latest high tech body armour doing battle on the ice chasing a puck around for an hour each morning on the weekends. What usually takes place ...

And so it begins

My god what have we done !!! In our infinite wisdom and ignorance. We have started Aidan down the dark and winding path into the sub culture of the Boarders. Perhaps we should call him Aidan Boarder. Aidan successfully completed Grade 1, apparently there was a 3 hr exam. And a 500 hundred word essay. Man the demands on Grade 1ers have gotten tougher. SO he's going to Grade 2 next year. In his words "grade is harder because you have to to take away, adding to is EASY taking away is hard-right shane" I'm going to guess this is some form of high ...
